The modules described in this chapter provide interfaces to operating
system features that are available on selected operating systems only.
The interfaces are generally modeled after the \UNIX{} or \C{}
interfaces but they are available on some other systems as well
(e.g. Windows or NT). Here's an overview:

SourceForge doesn't choke on this batch :-) I'm not entirely sure this is 100% correct. The patch changes an \index{persistency} to \index{presistence}, and I don't know what \index{} does. But it seems to do so persi--er, consistently, so I hope it isn't a problem.f8316638
